Qatari medical team arrives in Damascus to perform cardiac catheterization procedures

Damascus, SANA- A Qatari medical team consisting of cardiac surgery specialists from Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medicine arrived at Damascus International Airport Saturday as part of the “Medical Convoys Project” implemented by Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) in several countries around the world.

Dr. Hassan al-Qassoum, Medical Coordinator of the Qatar Red Crescent Society, told SANA that the delegation includes specialist consultants in adult and paediatric catheterization.

They are scheduled to perform 80 cardiac catheterization procedures and repair congenital heart defects in children free of charge, in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Health and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Additionally, they will provide hospitals with the necessary medical supplies for catheterization procedures.

Dr. al-Qassoum clarified that the procedures will be performed from February 22 to 27 at the University Center for Cardiac Diseases and Surgery in Al-Mowasat Hospital (paediatric cardiac catheterization procedures) and at the Damascus Center for Cardiac Diseases and Surgery in Dummar, Damascus (adult cardiac catheterization procedures).

For his part, Dr. Mohammad Akram Matouk, Director of Damascus Health Directorate, stated in a similar statement that the delegation consists of the most qualified cardiac disease and surgery doctors.

He said that the delegation will contribute to alleviating burdens and reducing patient waiting lists by performing several procedures free of charge as an initial phase, to be followed by another phase.

He noted that the corruption which prevailed during the rule of the deposed regime caused the deterioration of the country’s health system.
