UNDP calls for long-term investment to support recovery in Syria

New York, SANA- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has stressed that accelerating economic recovery in Syria is crucial to prevent the country from deteriorating and to restore stability.

“In addition to immediate humanitarian assistance, Syria’s recovery requires long-term investment in development to bring economic and social stability to its people,” UNDP Director Achim Steiner said in a press release from the UN News Centre.

Steiner added that restoring productivity to create jobs and alleviate poverty and revitalizing agriculture to achieve food security, as well as rebuilding the infrastructure of basic services such as health care, education and energy in Syria are key to achieving a sustainable future, prosperity and peace.

He also noted that moving forward requires a comprehensive strategy that addresses governance and economic stability, in addition to reactivating of sectors, the reconstruction of infrastructure and the strengthening of social services.
