Kremlin: No time frame outlined for Russian military operation to combat terrorism in Syria

Moscow, SANA-Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced on Friday that the Russian President Vladimir Putin has not specified a time limit for the Russian military operation to combat terrorism in Syria.

RT website quoted Peskov as saying in response to a question on whether the Kremlin anticipated that the operation in Syria would last more than a year, Peskov said that Putin, in his capacity as supreme commander of the armed forces, has never declared any predictions or assessments about the extent of the operation.

He pointed out that the Russian President announced that the main aim for the operation is to help the Syrians and Syrian Arab Army in fighting terrorists.

Russian airstrikes on terrorist organizations in Syria over the past year have ensured that “neither Islamic State, nor Al-Qaeda nor the Nusra Front are now sitting in Damascus,” Peskov said. He noted, however, that assessing the success of the ongoing operation is the task of military experts.

Commenting on the recent reports by the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights about the current situation in Syria, he said: “We do not view the information about what is happening in Syria from an organization stationed in the United Kingdom as valid.”
