De Mistura working to re-launch Syrian-Syrian dialogue next month

Berlin/Geneva, SANA- UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura announced on Friday his determination to set for a proper date in August for re-launching the Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva.

In a press conference in Berlin, de Mistura said that the Russian-US understanding towards some steps should help in resuming the dialogue.

He pointed out that the next three weeks are going to be extremely important to give the opportunity not only for the resumption of dialogue between the Syrians, but also in order to reduce “violence” in Syria, adding that the regional countries realize the importance of finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Earlier today, Jessy Chahine, the spokeswoman for de Mistura said during a press conference in Geneva that the UN Special Envoy hopes that a meeting expected to be held in Geneva next week with U.S. and Russian officials will pave the way for a resumption the Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva, de Mistura’s spokeswoman said on Friday.

“Our hope is that any discussions on Syria will help move forward with the process so we can also get to starting the next round of intra-Syrian talks,”  she said.

On Friday, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the consultations on Syria between Russia, the US and the UN due to be held in Geneva next week are the result of a recent meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Secretary of State John Kerry, pointing out that the two sides discussed the need to intensify efforts, the need to accelerate the pace of peace-making efforts.

In turn, the US State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Friday the planned US-Russia-UN meeting in Geneva will deal with enhancing the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria and the commitment to the steps agreed by State Secretary John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to solve the crisis in Syria.
