Environment Ministry and ICRC discuss cooperation in sanitation, pollution and water projects

Damascus, SANA – Caretaker Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Nazira Sarkis discussed on Sunday with Deputy Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Syria Beatrice Oxley and the accompanying delegation ways to enhance cooperation in improving environmental sanitation, reducing pollution and preserving public health.

During the meeting, Sarkis stressed the Ministry’s keenness on protecting environment through monitoring drinking water and air and soil quality, expressing thanks to the ICRC for its support to health and drinking water projects in Syria.

The Minister suggested cooperation with ICRC in various fields, including the reduction of pollution caused by the acts of terrorist organizations particularly in the areas to which the army restored security and stability.

She also referred to a project to secure drinking water through solar-powered water pumps to do without fossil fuels, in addition to empowering local communities through setting up income-generating small projects.

For his part, David Kalin who is in charge of environmental sanitation and water projects in ICRC, expressed the organizations’ readiness to cooperate with the ministry through developing a joint plan and discussing it with technicians so that to start implementation according to the priorities.
