Relief Committee promises more productive intervention after having been restructured

Damascus, SANA – Relief and humanitarian work in the coming period will focus on moving from emergency intervention to productive intervention, said Chairman of the Higher Committee for Relief Omar Ghalawanji on Monday.

Ghalawanji, who is Minister of Local Administration, was addressing the Committee’s first meeting after it had been restructured and had its presidency shifted from under Social Affairs Ministry to Ministry of Local Administration.

A new mechanism for relief work will be developed, with the new administrative affiliation taken into consideration, said Ghalawanji.

The primary focus, he added, will be to accelerate the process of accomplishing a national database that would enable the government to draw up response plans that observe the major needs and priorities on the national level.

The aim is to have all beneficiaries of the displaced and needy people accessed in all provinces and difficult-to-reach areas, Ghalawanji stressed.

He elaborated on the efforts to timely move from tackling emergency cases that have arisen mainly from the surge in displacement movement due to terrorist acts to focus on a more sustainable and productive remedy solutions.

The Minister announced that there will be a new strategic approach as far as the management of the humanitarian file is concerned through adopting a decentralization policy.

This new policy would allow a bigger role for local authorities and more flexibility to address each particular condition and case in the various areas according to the facts, Ghalawanji explained.
