Syrian Khaled Ghanem wins “Rising Star” Award as Most Distinguished Young Pediatric Oncologist in the World for 2022 _ SIOP

Damascus, SANA-The International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) has chosen the medical director of the Basma Specialized Unit, Dr. Khaled Mustafa Ghanem, as the most distinguished young pediatric oncologist in the world for the year 2022. Where he received the Young SIOP “Rising Star” Award at a conference held by SIOP in Barcelona, Spain.

The honoring was during a special ceremony attended by a group of pediatric oncologists from around the world.

The selection of Dr. Ghanem was based on his significant contributions at the local, regional and international levels in pediatric oncology, where he worked hard along with BASMA Pediatric Oncology Unit.

On the regional level, Dr. Ghanem is one of the key players in the Middle East with this specialization.

Speaking to SANA correspondent, Ghanem indicated that he was recently chosen to chair the scientific committee of the Conference of the Pediatric Oncology Group in the Middle East, which is scheduled to be held in the Omani city of Muscat in March 2023.

At the international level, Dr. Ghanem explained that he is one of the doctors participating in WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer aimed at improving survival from childhood cancer to at least 60% by 2030 and to reduce the suffering of all children with cancer, and in the St. Jude Global Alliance including more than 100 centers specializing in children’s tumors around the world.

“This is the first achievement to be recorded for a Syrian doctor in this field”, Dr. Ghanem said underlining the importance of this award and voicing pride in this achievement.

SIOP established the award this year to select one pediatric oncologist annually, under the age of 40, who, during his professional career, contributed in an outstanding manner to improving the reality of pediatric oncology globally.
