40 children placed in substitute family care in Homs

Homs, SANA – Forty children in Homs province who were separated from their families due to the ongoing crisis in the country have been placed in substitute family care to ensure proper raising and protection.

The step came in the framework of the family tracing and reunification project that was launched in Homs on June 24, 2014, by the Ministry of Social Affairs in cooperation with the Social Affairs Directorate in Homs and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The project seeks to establish a database in the domain of protecting children who have been separated from their families and deprived of family care and to study their cases to include them in substitute families as to provide them with the necessary moral and material support according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the international humanitarian law.

Director of Social Affairs Directorate in Homs Wassim al-Saghir told SANA that the situation of children who have been raised in substitute family care since the project’s launch is being assessed as to study the possibility of going ahead with the project, which has targeted children aged 3-15.
