New national polio vaccination campaign to be launched next Sunday

Damascus, SANA – A new polio vaccination campaign will be launched nationwide next Sunday targeting children under five.

Minister of Health Nizar Yazigi said in a statement to SANA that the Ministry has taken all technical and logistic preparations to ensure the success of the one-week campaign to reach all targeted children.

According to the Minister, 2.820 million dozes of vaccines have been distributed to be administered at health centers, mobile teams and makeshift centers hosting displaced people.

8581 health workers, 1140 skillful and experienced volunteers and 2315 mobile teams have been deployed to carry out the campaign, in addition to 844 cars, he said.

Yazigi noted that the campaign aims at reaching 2.750 million children all over the country.

This is going to be the 21st campaign to be launched by the Health Ministry since 2013 after polio cases were detected in Syria for the first time since 1995. After this series of vaccination campaigns, Syria has been announced polio-free as no cases have been detected since early 2014.
