Damascus, SANA – Syria’s national triathlon team won the gold medal at the Second Regional Unified Triathlon Special Olympics held in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Besides Syria, ten other Arab countries took part in the competitions including Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Palestine, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and Algeria.
The Syrian team won the gold medal after it took the lead in Group 2, while the silver medal went to Oman and the bronze medal to Egypt.
Another Egyptian team won the gold medal for Group 1, followed by the Tunisian and Moroccan teams respectively.
The Syrian team included Youssef Abdul-Rahman Sarouji (bike), Abdullah Skeif (run) and Mohammad Diaa Hanadi (swim).
In a statement to SANA Sports reporter, Head of the Special Olympics Institution Tarif Qoutresh said this tournament is very important as it helps prepare the Syrian team to participate in the Winter Triathlon World Championships that will be held in Austria next March.
He noted that an agreement has been signed with a French association to support the Syrian Special
Olympics.
