Hermitage Museum Director: Roadmap set for restoring archeological sites in Palmyra

Moscow, SANA – A roadmap for restoring the antiquities and archeological sites of Palmyra city has been set, Director of Russia’s Hermitage Museum Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky stated on Wednesday.

Piotrovsky told reporters that restoration plans for Palmyra have been set, but the work cannot be launched until the cessation of hostilities in the area.

Earlier, media outlets circulated news on experts suggesting constructing a 3D model of Palmyra’s antiquities and sites through aerial photography, a task that requires a team of three to four members and takes a month to be completed.

On March 27th 2016, the Syrian Army restored security and stability to the archeological city of Palmyra – a UNESCO world Heritage site – and eliminated ISIS terrorists’ posts in it.

After ISIS hordes spilled into Palmyra in May 2015, the terrorist organization perpetrated acts of vandalism to many prominent sites in the desert city, destroying several sites of great historical importance, including the Temple of Bel, the Temple of Baalshamin, the 1,900-year-old “Al-Lat Lion” statue, the distinctive tower tombs, and the iconic Arch of Triumph.
