Hasaka, SANA – The recently applied Category B curriculum seems to gain momentum as it has already provided the opportunity for hundreds of Basic Education students in Hasaka province to continue their educational attainment.
Reaching the largest possible number of children who are not enrolled in or dropped out of school and brining them back to school is the main objective of Category B curriculum plan set up by the Education Ministry and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Classes have been opened at Basic Education schools in Hasaka province, where the plan is applied, to bring children back to school, in a new track for the education sector to cope with the challenges spawned by the current crisis in the country.
To help make the program a success, training courses for the teaching staff and administrative cadres working at schools with Category B classes were conducted in the areas of Hasaka, Qamishli, Ras al-Ein and Tal Hmeis, according to the head of Hasaka Education Directorate Ilham Sourkhan.
The Category B curriculum includes the main subjects of Arabic language, mathematics, science and English language.
According to the Head of Planning and Statistics Department at the Directorate Daham Fayad, the newly opened classes in Hasaka accommodate 324 students (183 boys and 141 girls) and include two levels, the first one covers the first and second grades of the Basic Education stage and the other one covers the third and fourth grades.
Head of the Basic Education Department at the Directorate Fayssal al-Ali explained that the Category B classes have received children aged 8 to 15 years of those who were not enrolled in or dropped out of schools or whose education process was interrupted for any reason.
Study in these classes, which started at the beginning of the 2015/2016 study year, will last until May 28th, at which point there will be final exams.
According to al-Ali, there is also a chance for students to complete four levels within the Category B program, each covering two successive grades in a study year period, so that to prepare students to ultimately enroll in the ninth and final grade of the Basic Education stage.
The aforementioned curriculum is meant to be applied at 200 schools in Syria according to the first stage of the plan.
