Reading marathon activity launched in Damascus on World Book Day

Damascus, SANA – The Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Syrian “Steps Adventure Club,” organized an event titled “the reading marathon” at Tishreen Park in Damascus marking the World Book Day

The activity includes holding reading camp for primary school children which will run for fifty days, three hours per day, in addition to other interactive activities organized in parallel in several provinces, and will move from the capital Damascus to other Syrian provinces.

The opening ceremony contained various interactive activities with the participation of 25 volunteers from the Steps Adventure Club, after which children were divided into several groups, with one volunteer for each group who does a dramatic reading from a book, and then they leave the children to continue reading the rest of the book on their own.

In a statement to SANA, Assistant Culture Minister Bassam Abu Ghannam underlined the Ministry’s efforts to encourage parents to establish a small library at their houses so that they may contribute to raising a better generation throughenhancing children’s awareness, educating them, and enriching their imagination.

He noted that activities like the reading marathon will also help children interact with each other and develop social skills, expecting a wide participation by children since the activity will move from one province to another.

For his part, Head of the Steps Adventure Club Samer Mousa said that the main objective of the marathon is to help children acquire and develop good reading habits outside of school and its curricula, noting that reading sessions and other interactive activities will be organized tomorrow at the Children with Cancer Support Association (BASMA) and SOS Children’s Villages.

He added that children participating in the reading marathon were selected in cooperation with the Education Ministry and primary school directors, indicating that the activity targets children between 6 and 12 years of age with the aim of developing reading as a habit since childhood.
