Tokyo, SANA – Syria’s national cycling team is taking part in the Asian Cycling Championships taking place in Oshima Island in Japan.
The cyclist Mohammad al-Atrash was placed sixth in the 22.5 km individual time trial event, and he will also participate in 107 km individual road race.
In the men’s under-23 time trial, the cyclist Ali Ali won the 8th place in the 33.5 km individual time trial road and will compete in 120 km individual time race with his fellow Sami Hadid.
In a statement to SANA, the Chairman of the National Union of Cycling Mohammad Khodr said the result achieved by al-Atrash is very important being the first of its kind in the history of the Syrian cycling sport.
Khodr added that he met on the sidelines of the competitions with a number of officials of the Asian Cycling Confederation and representatives of many countries and discussed with them the issue of securing external training camps for the Syrian team, pointing out that some o those expressed their initial approval to set up such camps.
Athletes from 41 countries are participating in the Championships.
