US moves to resume foreign aid programs for several countries including Syria

Washington, SANA-The administration of US President Donald Trump has moved to reinstate at least six recently canceled U.S. foreign aid programs for emergency food assistance, for several countries, including Syria, according to informed US sources.

Reuters quoted sources who declined to be identified as saying: “The programs that have been requested to reinstate are the World Food Programme activities in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Jordan, Iraq, and Ecuador.

The sources added that the US decision to cancel these programs followed pressure from inside the US administration and Congress, as well as warnings from the United Nations World Food Programme.

Last Tuesday, the UN’s deputy envoy to Syria, Najat Rochdi, warned against suspending US food aid to Syria, saying, “This issue threatens to have devastating repercussions.”
