Lavrov says downing Russian aircraft aims to derail political settlement in Syria

Nicosia, SANA-Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said downing the Russian aircraft that was on an anti-terrorism mission over Syria indicates that certain circles seek to frustrate the political settlement in Syria.

Lavrov, who was speaking during a joint press conference with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulidis, said: “It is hard to depart from the impression that somebody sought to undermine the political settlement that started off within the framework of the International Syria Support Group and aid extremists to control Syria and the region.”

Lavrov said his country is committed to the political process to solve the crisis in Syria, hoping the international group for supporting Syria will accelerate efforts to submit a list of terrorist organizations and form a united delegation representing the opposition to start dialogue with the Syrian government.
