Russian delegation calls on Int’l Commission of Inquiry on Syria to turn its attention to terrorists’ crimes

Moscow, SANA – The Russian delegation participating in the meetings of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva called upon the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria to direct its attention to the crimes committed by the terrorist organizations in the country such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra.

This came in an interposition during the meetings of the 29th session of the Council.

The Russian delegation also called on the Commission to turn its attention to the impact on “harmless civilians” of the US-led international coalition’s air strikes on terrorists’ sites in Syria and Iraq.

They doubted the efficiency of these air strikes, saying they have not achieved the aspired goals so far, while the number of civilian victims due to these strikes is rising, according to information provided by non-government organizations.

Commenting on the content of the report submitted by the Commission to the Council, the Russian delegation referred to the support provided by some countries to groups of the so-called “moderate opposition”, which has led to aggravating the terror threat in Syria.

The delegation warned of the repercussions of the US program of training and equipping terrorists classified as “moderate opposition” on the Turkish and Jordanian territories, reminding that the weapons imported to the region in the framework of this program end up after all falling into the hands of ISIS and other terrorist organizations.

They noted that Russia and the Commission share an identical view that there is no alternative to a diplomatic political settlement to the crisis in Syria.
