Damascus, SANA- On the occasion of the World Traffic Day, the Traffic Department at the Ministry of Interior organizes statistical tablets on the traffic accidents to provide a valuation of the material and physical damage and the numbers of deaths, and it publishes them to raise awareness among citizens on traffic accidents and their catastrophic results.
World Traffic Day is celebrated on May 4th every year and it was firstly celebrated after an international conference held in Geneva in 1967 as a result of the huge increase in the number of traffic accidents.
Head of the Traffic Department Gen. Tal’at Salam said that the numbers of traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2015 reached 1.941 in comparison with 2.349 accidents in the same period last year with a decrease of 17 percent.
Salam indicated that the number of deaths as a result of traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2015 reached 73 while the number of the wounded was estimated at 1.008.
He added that the reasons behind those accidents are the excessive speed, the irregular stoحping, the failure to comply with the traffic signals, talking on mobile phones while driving, drug and alcohol abuse, reckless driving and driving in the opposite direction of the road.
For his part, Head of Traffic Branch Gen. Hussein Jum’aa said that the Interior Ministry celebrates World Traffic Day to raise traffic awareness among citizens.
