New York, SANA- Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani has affirmed the political approach towards Syria’s chemical case by some countries represents “a failed strategy” that endangers the process of resolving the remaining issues.
“The adoption of double standards only distracts attention from the technical nature of the discussions at hand,” The Iranian diplomat made the remark in a session of the UN Security Council held Monday to discuss “Syria’s chemical file”.
He added that Iran is concerned about the exploitation and politicization of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which has caused disagreements between member states and weakened the credibility and legitimacy of the organization.
Iravani stressed that Iran would like to hold a constructive dialogue between Syria and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at the highest level with a specific time frame to solve the remaining issues and close the file once and for all.
He said that every investigation must be impartial, professional, credible, objective and fully compatible with the requirements and procedures of the convention.
The Iranian delegate pointed out that holding monthly meetings on the Syrian chemical file, despite the absence of new developments, is a repetition by some members of the Security Council of their previous allegations against Syria, and would only lead to a waste of United Nations resources and the time of the Security Council.
