Education Ministry, UNDP discuss cooperation in awareness- raising amongst youth

Damascus, SANA- Syria and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the domains of education and awareness-raising and the possibility of implementing special programs to confront the challenges facing the youth in the field of drugs, crime and violence.

That came during a meeting held Thursday between Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa and a delegations of the UNDP.

Minister Tabbaa stressed the need to develop a joint program to prevent youth drug abuse and crime, particularly after Syria had been exposed to a war that led to psychological, social and economic pressures that led to a change in the behavior of young people towards immoral practices.

He said that preventing the occurrence of crime among the youth entails an understanding of its tools and means.

For her part, Dr. Hala Rizk, Director of the Social Cohesion and Local Development Team at the United Nations Development Program, highlighted the importance of developing a unified future plan with the Ministry to work on it, including preventive programs for the problems faced by young people that commensurate with the Syrian reality.

Rizk also called for directing these programs according to United Nations standards to help decision makers and institutions raise preventive awareness and adopt these programs.
