Aleppo, SANA – Terrorist groups on Sunday set off explosives in the antique al- Soltanieh Mosque in the old city of Aleppo.
SANA reporter in Aleppo said the terrorist bombing caused massive destruction in many parts of the mosque, which is situated near Aleppo Citadel along with a number of other archeological and tourist sites.
A military source said the army units foiled terrorists’ attempt to infiltrate the area after the event and inflicted heavy losses upon the assailants.
The Soltanieh Mosque was built in the Ayyubid era during the lifetime of King Zahir Ghazi bin Saladin. This attack is but one of a number of similar attacks against Aleppo, its residents, and religious and cultural monuments. Previous terrorist attacks targeted the Carlton Hotel and Aleppo Souk, which is the oldest marketplace in the world.
The Ministry of Religious Endowments condemned the terrorist act, describing it as a retaliation for the achievements made by the Syrian army.
