Talks with WHO to boost Syria’s health system and activate emergency response

Damascus, SANA – Means of upgrading the health system in Syria and the active response to emergency cases were discussed in a meeting between the Minister of Health and representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Rehabilitation of the health institutions which sustained damage due to the ongoing events in the country was highlighted by Minister Nizar Yazigi as being the current focus of the Ministry’s work, along with bolstering the health system so that it would be able to provide healthcare and secure and deliver vaccinations and medicines to all citizens in all areas.

Yazigi also pointed out that the Ministry is to set up joint action plans with the WHO over next year.

WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Alaa al-Alwan highlighted the Organization’s keenness on cooperation with the Ministry to ensure the provision of healthcare to all people all over Syria.

Al-Alwan also stressed support for the great efforts, technically and vocationally, put by the Ministry in the framework of strengthening the health system and ensuring active response to emergency cases.

Samir Ben Yahmed, WHO Director of Programme Management, underscored the significance of having clear plans for the health sector in Syria that cover its necessary equipment and medicine needs.
