Damascus, SANA – President Bashar al-Assad on Monday received UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura and the accompanying delegation.
Talks during the meeting touched on the presentation given by de Mistura at the Security Council on the situation in Syria.
De Mistura also briefed President al-Assad on the main points and the goals of his initiative for “freezing” fighting in Aleppo city.
In turn, President al-Assad underlined the importance of Aleppo city, asserting the government’s commitment to the safety of civilians across the country. He said that de Mistura’s initiative merits consideration and pursuing its goals of restoring security to Aleppo city.
President al-Assad and de Mistura agreed upon the need to implement Security Council resolutions nos. 2170 and 2178 and to unite all international efforts in order to combat terrorism in Syria and the region which poses a threat to the entire world.
At the end of the meeting, de Mistura said he intends to continue carrying out his mission with all sides in order to overcome any difficulties and realize stability and peace in Syria.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Bouthaina Shaaban, and Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad.
Last September, President al-Assad affirmed during his meeting with de Mistura that what Syria and the region are currently witnessing has made combating terrorism a priority because it has become the greatest danger that is threatening everybody.
He added that any progress that could be achieved in combating terrorism would contribute to boosting the national reconciliations which have so far succeeded in many areas across the country, forming a springboard towards a comprehensive inter-Syrian dialogue.
