A walk held in Lattakia for Autism awareness

Lattakia, SANA-The Annual Walk for Autism  has been organized by the Autism Society in Lattakia Province in cooperation with the Syrian Trust for Development, Italian organization of human land and the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs.

The walk sought to convey a message on that more care and attention should be given to the children with disabilities, particularly those who are suffering from autism disorder.

Autism is a complex neurobehavioral condition that includes impairments in social interaction and developmental language and communication skills combined with rigid, repetitive behaviors.

Because of the range of symptoms, this condition is now called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It covers a large spectrum of symptoms, skills, and levels of impairment.

ASD ranges in severity from a handicap that somewhat limits an otherwise normal life to a devastating disability that may require institutional care.

The walk, which started on Saturday night from the southern corniche of the province, also aimed at encouraging citizens to participate in raising awareness on the Autism disorder and introducing the Special Education Center which provides services for people with disabilities for free, Executive Director of Autism Society Jubran Bashir told SANA.

One of the volunteers at the Autism Society Shaza Yusuf said that April is the month of raising awareness on Autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Shaza indicated that a number of the children with autism disorder participated in the 4 km walk, in addition to the participation of wounded army personnel and a large number of people from different activities.

Participants in the walk said that their participation in the walk aims at supporting the Autism Society in Lattakia.

They wished that this activity will be an incentive to accept the children with disabilities and to integrate them into society.

The Autism Society was established in Lattakia in 2006 and it provides its services to the people with disabilities, particularly for the children with the autism disorder.
