Lavrov: Sochi agreement on Idleb temporary, terrorism cannot remain in it

Sochi, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated that the Sochi agreement on Idleb is temporary, and that it cannot be permitted to let terrorist hotbeds remain in it.

During a press conference with Lesotho Foreign Minister Lesego Makgothi on Wednesday, Lavrov said that Jabhat al-Nusra terror organizations control 90% of Idleb province, stressing that the agreement reached in September regarding Idleb in Sochi is temporary.

He said that establishing a de-escalation zone in Idleb as per the aforementioned agreement doesn’t mean allowing terrorist hotbeds to remain in it; rather they must be eradicated.

The Minister reaffirmed Russia’s support for Syria and the Syrian Arab Army until all Syrian territory is rid of terrorism.

He noted that some Western states are hindering the convening of the committee for discussing the constitution, adding that the meeting for the presidents of the Astana process guarantor states (Russia, Iran, and Turkey) on Thursday will discuss this issue.

Lavrov also said that Russia will support Syria’s efforts to seek condemnation from the Security Council for the bombardment of Deir Ezzor by the “international coalition” which has claimed civilian victims.
