20 states demand in joint statement probe into human rights violations by terrorists in Syria

Geneva, SANA-Russia’s representative at the UN Human Rights Council Alexy Borodavkin demanded that the independent international commission of inquiry on human rights in Syria conduct a probe into human rights violations by terrorist groups in Syria.

The Russian representative demanded, in a joint statement by twenty countries adopted during the 27th session of the Council, that the human rights committee issue an “independent and urgent report” on the grave human rights violations committed by terrorists in Syria.

Terrorist crimes in Syria which are committed by such groups as ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra constitute grave violations of human rights, target civilians and have left a “detrimental impact” on the lives of the Syrians, the statement stated.

The joint statement indicated that a growth of extremism which is drawing foreign jihadists from all over the globe has contributed to the cross-border spread of ISIS and a continuation of the atrocities it is committing in Iraq and Syria.

“This requires that the international community unite to confront this common adversary, which is terrorism in the region,” added the statement.

The statement called for addressing the root causes of takfiri terrorism and taking “calculated and tangible measures” to stem the spread of takfiri thought, in conjunction with effective efforts to stop funding terrorist organizations.

Commenting on the national reconciliations in Syria, the statement said they help in restoring security and stability and provide a basis for a Syrian-Syrian dialogue that prepares the ground for a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

The countries that joined the statement are Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Palestine, Algeria, Iran, Nicaragua, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, North Korea, Kirghizstan, Sudan and Sri Lanka.
