New York, SANA – Russia’s Permanent Representative at the UN Vasily Nebenzya warned against the dangerous repercussions of the US military threats against Syria.
During a Security Council session held on Friday upon Russia’s request to discuss the US threats about attacking Syria, Nebenzya said that the US and its allies are sending more naval forces towards the Syrian coast, and there’s a sense that Washington has elected to carry out a military scenario in Syria, and such a thing has dangerous repercussions on world security and it cannot be permitted.
He recalled how the US had exploited the Security Council to justify the use of force in Iraq and Libya in the past, calling on the US, France, and Britain to come to their senses and to respect international law rather than push the world towards the brink of danger.
Nebenzya stressed that terrorist organizations are the ones that will benefit from any potential US attack on Syrian forces, calling for finding political solutions in Syria.
He hoped that the mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will conduct an independent and unbiased investigation into the allegations about the use of chemical weapons in Douma, noting that there is no reliable evidence of such a thing taking place; rather there is information suggesting that this was an act of provocation in which intelligence agencies of some countries were involved.
For his part, China’s Deputy Representative at the UN said that unilateral military actions and circumventing the Security Council contradict the UN Charter and the basic rules of international relations, calling on the Council to assume its responsibility to preserve peace and prevent a war from breaking out.
He added that Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity must be respected, and that China calls for refraining from any steps that would escalate the situation further, adding that there can be no military solution for the crisis in Syria; there can only be a political solution via dialogue.
In turn, Bolivia’s Representative Sacha Sergio Llorenty Soliz said that a Security Council member state is threatening to use force against a UN member state, which violates the UN Charter, noting that the Security Council isn’t just made up of five permanent members; rather it represents all UN member states, therefore it should be exploited to promote wars and intervention or to be used as a tool to serve some sides’ interests.
