Joseph Absi elected Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch

Beirut, SANA – The Melkite Greek Catholic Synodus which has been convening in the Patriarchate summer headquarters in Aley in Lebanon since Monday elected Archbishop Joseph Absi as the new Patriarch of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

Absi was born in Damascus in 1946, studied at the Messengers of St. Paul Society, and was ordained in 1973. In 1999 he was elected as head of the Society, and later he was appointed bishop, patriarchal deputy, and Archbishop.

Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the previous Patriarch Gregory III Laham on May 6th.
