Sculptor Agha: Art best expression of reality

Damascus, SANA – Motivated by his belief in art as a way to spread culture in society, sculptor Agha Afif started his artistic project and established his own studio in 2003 which he turned into an art gallery “Quartz” to showcase his works in 2014.

In a statement to SANA, Agha noted that he discovered his talent in childhood where he spent hours forming houses, animals and birds with mud and clay, later on, he used beach stones and rocks in his works.

“My first participation in a sculpture exhibition included small stone sculptures stemmed from reality, said Agha, adding that the exhibition was held in Abu Rummaneh Cultural Center in Damascus in 1991 and it showcased more than 150 different artworks.

Agha added that he prefers hard raw materials such as stones, marble and basalt due to the challenges they pose while forming them.

Agha, who couldn’t ignore the current crisis taking place in his country, found in the abstract method a way to reflect reality. The terrorists’ crimes against the Syrian people have become the main theme for his works.

He called on cultural institutions to pay more attention and provide support to plastic artists.
