Sweida, SANA- Sweida’s First Charity Marathon was held on Friday to support the Friends of Cancer Patients Association with the participant of local, sport, youth and art figures.
The marathon is organized by Sweida Electronic Market application under the title of “Run for Peace in Syria”.
The participants who wore white T-shirts as a sign of peace set off from Tishreen Square in Sweida city towards the National Museum and finished at the Sport Hall, in which the winners and a number of supporters and artists were honored.
The participants in the event said that the Syrians seize every opportunity to demonstrate their steadfastness in the face of war and terrorism and that they stand unified in the face of difficulties and challenges.
In turn, Shadi Majdalani, Chairman of Sweida Electronic Market application said in a statement to SANA that the marathon is the first of its kind in the province which affirms the importance of humanitarian support for cancer patients and contributes to alleviating their suffering, hailing the support of business and local figures for this initiative which is planned to be repeated annually.
For his part, Dr. Adnan Mkalid, Chairman of Friends of Cancer Patients Association in Sweida pointed out the importance of this initiative which reflects the local society’s support for cancer patients, mainly in light of rising drugs and treatment costs due to the current circumstances.
He added that the proceeds of the marathon will go to cancer patients whose number reached 1500 in the province by purchasing necessary chemical dosages for them.
Actress Sulaf Fawakherji said that the marathon is a message to the world that the Syrians are still able to work and support each other, especially during current tough circumstances.
Friends of Cancer Patients Association in Sweida began its work in 2008. It offers chemical dosages, surgeries and medical tests for patients in addition to transporting patients to al-Bairouni Hospital in Damascus for free.
