New York, SANA-UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura called for adopting a new approach to solve the crisis in Syria; mainly holding talks on specified topics among the Syrians, including “combating terrorism and establishing an international communication group.”
“Until now, there is no agreement about the political solution in Syria, yet, the UN is obliged to continue its efforts,” AFP quoted de Mistura as saying in front of Security Council.
The AFP reported that de Mistura submitted to the Security Council, for the first time, the outcomes of months of consultations with the main sides in the crisis in Syria, among them a number of regional countries.
“A number of those sides told us not to invite them to Geneva 3 conference because the situation is not ripe yet,” De Mistura added.
De Mistura said “Unfortunately, until now, there is no agreement on how to apply Geneva communiqué,” adding “but the UN is obliged to keep this file on table.”
He went on to say “for that reason, I suggest to deepen the form of Geneva consultations… I have the determination to call on the Syrians for talks which deal with specified topics in parallel through work groups.”
He pointed out to four main files; mainly “Security for all, offering medical aid, releasing the detained persons and the political issues, among them elections, the military feature and combating terrorism.
De Mistura said conditions have changed since Geneva two conferences with the emergence of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terrorist organization; yet, making counter-terrorism is a priority for lots of sides.
