Moscow, SANA – UN envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura shares Moscow’s position that fighting terrorism must be a priority at this stage in Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Thursday.
Speaking at the end of a meeting he held with de Mistura, Gatilov said he discussed with the latter “the next steps aimed at kick-starting the process of the political settlement in Syria.”
The UN envoy, Gatilov added, has got “practical ideas” in this regard, and he is going to convey them to the UN Secretary General and subsequently the Security Council by the end of this month.
“We have arrived at a common view that the priority now is fighting terrorism on the Syrian land, and that all main players, including the regional ones, be united to activate combating terrorism,” said Gatilov.
He noted that views were exchanged with de Mistura in detail, and therefore there is no need that the UN envoy visits Moscow this month.
Earlier on the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need to unify all efforts aimed at fighting ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and the other terrorist organizations linked to international terrorism with double standards put aside.
