Paris, SANA-With the participation of Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, as well as foreign ministers from several Arab and Western countries, the Paris Conference on Syria opened today.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said “Our goal at this conference is to help the Syrians, and we want a free, sovereign, unified and stable Syria and for this reason we need to establish an environment that contributes to achieving peace, reunification and reintegrating Syria into the region, and we are ready to support the Syrian transitional administration in order to achieve its goals.”.
Noel Barrot stressed that the challenges are great and that rapid and coordinated action is needed to allow the flow of humanitarian aid that the Syrians still need, and to facilitate financial and economic flows for the reconstruction of the country and encourage investment, indicating that this is why Paris is working with its European counterparts to quickly lift a number of economic sanctions, but with guarantees for their removal.
The French Foreign Minister explained that economic sanctions contributed to the fall of the al-Assad regime, but must no longer constitute an obstacle to the rise of Syria, noting that the European Union has allocated more than 35 billion euros since 2011 for Syria and neighboring countries, and is ready to participate in reconstruction efforts and help the Syrian people, as well as to support the efforts to return Syrian refugees to their country.
Noel Barrot stressed that the national dialogue launched by Syria is important and meets the needs of the Syrians.
