Agriculture Minister addresses People’s Assembly members’ queries

Damascus, SANA – Agriculture Minister Ahmad al-Qadri on Monday addressed questions and queries from members of the People’s Assembly on the Ministry’s performance.

During the Assembly session, members called for ensuring the availability of supplies needed for agricultural production, making use of unexploited arable land, compensating farmers whose crops were damaged by weather conditions and who were affected by terrorism, and curbing the smuggling of livestock outside the country.

Minister al-Qadiri said that agricultural production is continuing at a good pace despite the conditions of the crisis, noting that this year’s wheat crop is promising in all provinces.

He said that the Ministry exerted considerable efforts to provide farmers’ needs and reduce the impact of the crisis on them, noting that it provided tons of feed and millions of veterinary vaccines for free in 2014, in addition to working to support the poultry production sector in several areas as well as cattle production, in addition to working to develop fish farming.

Al-Qadiri also reviewed steps taken to improve produce marketing inside Syria and exports, saying that the possibility of establishing a green marine corridor between Sryia and Russia to export agricultural products is being studied.

He also said that the Ministry is working to prevent transgressions against forests and illegal logging, in addition to working with the Economy and Foreign Trade Ministry to prohibit the exportation of unprocessed wood.
