Syria and Iran sign economic cooperation agreement

Damascus, SANA – Syria and Iran signed an economic cooperation agreement covering the fields of energy, industry, agriculture, and joint investment, with emphasis on enhancing the role of the private sector in this regard.

The agreement was signed during talks held by the two sides to discuss issues such as expanding cooperation in the fields of petroleum, gas, establishing electric power stations and maintaining existing ones, health cooperation and procuring medicine for terminal diseases and cancer, and facilitating Iranian investments in Syria.

In a statement to journalist after signing the agreement, Iranian Minister of Economy and Finance Ali Tayebnia said that this agreement marks a new stage of bilateral cooperation, particularly since Syria is beginning to recover, asserting that there are many prospects for cooperation that serve the two countries’ people.

In a similar statement, Finance Minister Ismael Ismael said that the agreement comes at a time when Syria is gearing up for the reconstruction stage and relaunching industrial production on a large scale, noting that Iran will play a primary role in this process.

In the same context, Deputy Prime Minister, Local Administration Minister Omar Ghalawanji discussed with Tayebnia the possibility of expanding commercial cooperation between the two countries.

Ghalawanji called on Iranian companies to participate in the reconstruction stage in Syria by carrying out and funding new investments, while Tayebnia affirmed his government’s desire to expand cooperation in this field.
