805 deaths, 105 collapsed buildings, and 900 completely damaged ones in quake-affected areas, Lattakia

Lattakia – SANA The Governor of Lattakia, Amer Hilal, announced that the earthquake that hit Syria left 805 deaths and about 1,131 injuries, including 61 who are still receiving treatment in hospitals.

Hilal said in a statement that the collapsed buildings amounted to 105 buildings, pointing to the presence of 91 engineering examination committee formed by the Engineers Syndicate, the branch of the General Company for Engineering Studies, the Directorate of Technical Services and Administrative Units.

“The committee inspected, until the 25th of this month, 23,954 buildings, and its reports show that there are about 900 completely damaged buildings, which will be presented to the Structural Safety Committee to take a decision; either consolidation or demolition”, Hilal added.

Hilal explained that after the second earthquake occurred on February 20th , the governorate formed 30 committees to inspect 1,200 schools in the governorate to assess their structural and architectural condition, as 144 schools have been inspected so far.

He indicated that the governorate officially opened 29 shelter centers, in which more than 2,267 families reside, with the presence of families who preferred to live with their relatives or moved to live in the countryside, indicating that work is underway with all civil and community agencies to provide them with the necessary support.

“During the next week, work will begin to implement alternative housing in the cities of Jableh and Lattakia, after an agreement was reached to determine the locations for the establishment of these homes”. Hilal confirmed.
