Damascus, SANA, Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Faysal Mikdad, on Wednesday received Commissioner-General of the United Nations’ Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini.
Mikdad affirmed that the Syrian government will continue its commitment to provide facilities and support required for the UNRWA to meet the needs of the Palestinian refugees in terms of basic services such as education, medical care and others, and ease suffering and challenges of the Palestinian people since the Nakba in 1948.
He stressed the need to enhance cooperation and coordination between the Syrian government and the UNRWA agency to overcome obstacles and burdens which prevent the success of the agency’s projects and its activities aimed at delivering services to the Palestinian camps in Syria, which have been destroyed by terrorist groups.
Mikdad underlined that the UN and the international community in general should assume their responsibilities in providing protection to the Palestinian people, supporting UNRWA and providing assistance to follow up its tasks efficiently in a way that meets the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people.
He also condemned all terrorist practices of the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people, stressing the necessity of restoring firm and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital.
For his part, Lazzarini thanked and appreciated support provided by the Syrian government to the agency, which contributes to facilitating its work and its success, noting that the agency is making significant efforts to meet the current and basic needs of the Palestinian people in Syria.
Lazzarini hoped that an international conference would be held next October to provide support to UNRWA.
