China calls on the United States to lift the unilateral coercive measures on Syria

New York, SANA- China has renewed its demand for the United States to immediately lift the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria, calling at the same time the international community to increase humanitarian aids based on respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying “Years of unilateral sanctions have caused big difficulties for the Syrian people, and they must be lifted immediately, “pointing out that these unilateral coercive measures harm the Syrian economy and destroy Syrians’ livelihoods and they undermine Syria’s ability to respond to the emerging coronavirus disease.

Geng added that “if the United States is really interested in the humanitarian situation in Syria, it can do many things instead of blaming others, and that includes lifting the unilateral sanctions”, adding, “I strongly urge the United States to stop politicizing the Syrian humanitarian issue and align its words with actions.”

Shuang clarified to the Security Council that the United Nations Secretary-General, his Special Envoy for Syria and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs made repeated calls for the sanctions to be canceled, saying, “China strongly urges the United States to respond effectively to these urgent appeals and to lift the unilateral sanctions without delay.”

Shuang stressed the need for the international community to support the Syrian government to reactivate the economy, calling on all sides concerned, especially the United Nations agencies, to increase aides and coordination in humanitarian operations in Syria.
