Traffic accidents drop by 37.7 percent during period of curfew imposed due to coronavirus

Damascus, SANA- Traffic accidents have decreased by 37.7 percent during the period of application of the curfew due to the Coronavirus pandemic compared to the same period last year.

The number of traffic accidents during the month of April 2020 reached 427 accidents which resulted in the death of 18 people and the injury of 193 others, while the total number of accidents recorded for the month of April last year reached 686 accidents which caused 53 deaths and 396 injuries, according to the statistics of the Interior Ministry.

 The statistics of the ministry, of which SANA obtained a copy, showed that 181 accidents registered during April 2020 caused physical damage and 246 accidents caused material damage while 373 of the recorded accidents in April last year caused physical damage, and 313 accidents caused material damage.

 In a statement to SANA, Director of the Traffic Department at the Ministry of Interior, Major General Mamoun al-Amouri said that the Ministry is making great efforts to reduce traffic accidents in all circumstances by improving the services provided by the traffic facility in light of the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic.

 Al-Amouri underlined the importance of the role played by traffic officers in implementing the curfew on vehicles which was approved by the governmental team on Coronavirus response measures has had a positive impact on reducing the number of traffic accidents and traffic violations.

He noted that the citizens’ adherence to the traffic regulations and the commitment to times of curfew reflect a civilized image about them through their respect of laws.
