Cabinet approves start of implementing agricultural production plan for 2016/2017 season

Damascus, SANA- In a weekly session chaired by Prime Minister Imad Khamis, the Cabinet approved on Tuesday starting the implementation of the agricultural production plan for the 2016/2017 agricultural season which takes into account the current situation the country is going through.

The plan encourages the cultivation of all safe areas, in addition to providing all the needs of the agricultural production, and support the livestock sector through meeting the requirements of importing cows and feed.

The plan concentrates on increasing rainfed and irrigated spaces planted with wheat compared with the previous season, and forming central and subsidiary work groups to follow up on its implementation and to solve any problem it could face.

The Cabinet called on the Ministry of Justice to prepare legislation on imposing penalties on those who harm the reputation of the Syrian agricultural and industrial exports.

The Cabinet also decided to reform the joint Syrian committees with friendly countries which have good economic and commercial relations with Syria.

The Cabinet approved a draft law on amending clause (A) of the article 29 of law no. 2 for the year 2014 which includes amending the fees imposed on the Arabs and foreigners for granting them residence cards in accordance with the current conditions and the systems employed in most of the countries around the world.

In a statement after the session, Agriculture Minister Ahmad al-Qadiri said that the 2016/2017 agricultural plan focuses on increasing areas cultivated with wheat by more than 72,000 hectares than in the 2015/2016 season, adding that the Ministry will focus on supporting family-run farming and livestock, as well as encouraging farming in areas that have been secured by the army recently.
