Syria participates in forum of Journalists of Muslim Countries against Extremism

Moscow, SANA – Forum of “Journalists of the Muslim Countries against Extremism” opened in Moscow on Tuesday with the participation of Syria, represented by the Director General of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) Ahmad Dawa.

The forum will try to discuss and coordinate media and journalistic work in the fight against terrorism.

The Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and North Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov attended the opening of the forum, which is bringing together representatives from different Muslim countries, in addition to a number of Russian political and social figures.

Mr. Dawa said that religious extremism, poverty and other factors were the main incubators for terrorism, adding that the new phenomenon, which started upon the withdrawal of the U.S. troops from Iraq, was investing in terrorism.

Dawa added that most of terrorist organizations’ leaders were detainees in U.S. prisons, adding that some regional countries, such as the KSA, Qatar and Turkey, are explicitly supporting terrorists in all aspects, including sending armaments and providing official media outlets to spread their ideology.

He affirmed that there are major media outlets that support the terrorists, adding that analyzing the video footages broadcast by the terrorist organizations show that they have hi-tech media equipment and experience.

The participants said the media institutions shoulder great responsibility in revealing the true nature of terrorism and its backers, adding that terrorists have great ability to recruit new fighters and taking advantage of the social media networks.
