Ban Kin-moon condemns terrorists’ shelling of Russian Embassy in Damascus

New York, SANA – The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the terrorist attack with mortar shells that targeted the Russian Embassy in Damascus last Sunday, stressing that the attacks against diplomatic missions are prohibited under international law.

“The Secretary-General has condemned yesterday’s shelling of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Damascus,” Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

Dujarric asserted that “Violations and attacks against diplomatic or consular mission premises are clearly prohibited under international law. Diplomatic facilities must enjoy protection even in times of conflict.”

Earlier on Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry vehemently condemned the terrorist attack which targeted the Russian Embassy in Damascus.

“We strongly condemn the criminal shelling of the Russian diplomatic mission in Damascus,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that “Moscow expects a clear stance by members of the international community, including the regional sides, regarding this criminal act.”

It added the attacks, with mortar shells, on the Embassy and other places have been launched from places where “gunmen” are positioned in Joubar neighborhood in Damascus, holding terrorism-foreign supporters responsible for this heinous act.
