Electricity Minister: Steps taken to meet increasing demand for electricity in Lattakia

Lattakia, SANA – Electricity Minister Imad Khamis said the Ministry took a number of steps to address and meet the increasing demand for electricity in Lattakia which resulted from the opening of new economic projects and the beginning of the tourist season.

During his visit on Sunday to the central warehouse and substations in Lattakia and Burj Islam and the Electric Technical Institute, Khamis steps said that existing stations have undergone maintenance and work is underway to bring the Saqoubin and Burj Islam substations online.

He said that the transformers in the 66/20 kilowatts substations have been replaced with ones that have a higher capacity, and that the Burj Islam substation should become operational within the next few months.

The Minister explained that the Ministry’s plans include building a power plant in Lattakia, with a location having already been selected, and talks with companies are underway for constructing it, adding that studies are also being done to build a 230 KV substation in the sports complex in the city.

He added that steps have been taken to monitor and curb loss in power transmission and illegal drawing of electricity, and that other steps have also been taken to provide fuel to power plants which should reduce rationing hours.
