Lavrov and Kerry.. Necessity of starting Syrian dialogue on the basis of Geneva1 communiqué

Moscow, SANA – Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov and the US Secretary of State John Kerry asserted, during their meeting on Tuesday, necessity of continuing exerted efforts for launching a complete dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition on the basis of Geneva 1 communiqué.

Lavrov added that in light of contradictions within the opposition, it is very important for foreign players, which have influence on the opposition groups, to press these groups for starting negotiations on the basis of Geneva1 communiqué of June 30th, 2012.

Lavrov voiced hope to continue dialogue with the US or countries of the Middle East concerning the participation of foreign players in the settlement process for the Syrian crisis.

He affirmed rapprochement of Moscow and Washington’s stances to solve the crisis in Syria, stressing that the two sides are aware that the peaceful process should be led by Syrians themselves.

Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov stressed the importance of the US ending double-standard policy in addressing the terrorist organization of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

In a different context, Lavrov called for not politicizing the issue of using chemical materials in Syria and exploiting it as away to press Syrians politically as a justification for some countries’ intentions to use power against the Syrian state.

Russian Foreign Minister called for a professional and honest investigation to prove the reality by facts in order to avoid repetition of what had been seen in August 2014, citing his country’s call for a unit from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to conduct an investigation in the issue.

Earlier Tuesday, Kerry met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi and described the meeting in statements as “honest” and tackled the situation in Syria and Ukraine in addition to the Iranian nuclear file.
