On UN Day, some major countries continue to violate the Charter to serve their political agendas

New York, SANA- On October 24th each year, the world celebrates the United Nations Day, when the UN organization’s charter came into force in 1945 to resolve the conflicts between states politically ; however, the UN faces challenges impeding to achieve the goals for which it was established, such as violation of its Charter by some Western countries and targeting states that do not rotate in their political orbit.

Later, in 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended the member states to celebrate the UN Day at the national level to gain the support of the peoples and make them aware of the organization principles which advocate international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, and achieve international cooperation.

Syria is a founding member of the UN , as it participated in drafting the Charter with a delegation headed by Ambassadors Fares al-Khoury and Farid Zein Eddin, who drafted the Article no. 78 of the Charter , which stipulates “The trusteeship system shall not apply to territories which have become Members of the United Nations, relationship among which shall be based on respect for the principle of sovereign equality.” Thank to this Article, many countries obtained their independence, thus raising the number of the UN state members from 51 to 193.

On this occasion, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the countries of the world to seek an end to conflicts which increase tension in our world, adding that COVID-19 pandemic, hunger, poverty and climate emergencies remind us that our world is far from perfect, but they also show that solidarity is the only way to move  forward.
