New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari has underlined the importance of activating the UN role in the domain of maintaining international peace and security away from double standards and politicization.
Al-Jaafari’s remarks came during a session of unofficial online consultations held Friday to discuss the draft universal Declaration on the 75th anniversary of establishing the United Nations.
The Syrian diplomat indicated that any process of developing the UN bodies must be consistent with the provisions of the Charter.
He stressed the importance of the commitment to the fundamental principles of that Charter, on top the equal rights and sovereignty for all nations and the preservation of their political independence and territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination.
“The commemoration of this anniversary is an opportunity to reactivate UN action to face the phenomenon of inequality and selectivity and avoid conflicts, in addition to fighting terrorism, climate change and the pandemics as the latest challenge facing our world,” al-Jaafari said.
Syria’s permanent Representative to the United Nations said that the reform efforts that take place within the framework of the United Nations and its various bodies must be subjected to the provisions of the Charter and within clear mandates set by the member states and that they are not subject to initiatives launched by the organization’s general secretariat without a mandate or coordination with the governments of the member states.
Al-Jaafari stressed that the peoples of the world are looking forward today to the governments of the member states to exercise the utmost responsibility for achieving global collective solidarity to confront the pandemic of the novel Coronavirus and at the same time for ensuring commitment to the true spirit that led the efforts of the founders of this organization 75 years ago and thus victory over disappointments and challenges through Initial collective action diplomacy that rejects populism, protectionism, narrow interests and unilateral actions that violate the most important principles of the Charter which is global solidarity
