Damascus, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad on Monday received Secretary General of the Norwegian People’s Aid (Norsk Folkehjelp) Henriette Westhrin and the accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, Mikdad lauded the humanitarian aid provided by Norwegian organizations in Syria.
He also discussed the current situation pertaining to the issue of landmines left behind by terrorists, and the great threat they pose to Syrian civilians, as well as the increasing number of victims of landmines and IEDs planted by terrorists.
Mikdad said that the Syrian state is exerting great efforts to deal with the threat of landmines, noting that these efforts included a campaign to raise public awareness about this threat and how to act when encountering unknown objects, which was carried out in cooperation with the UN.
For her part, Westhrin said her organization is prepared to participate in demining efforts on the ground, as well as providing all the expertise at its disposal.
She also noted that the Norwegian People’s Aid is active in several countries that have landmine issues, where it helps these countries’ governments in carrying out national programs to address this threat.
