Al-Moallem, ICRC President discuss cooperation, means to improve conditions of affected Syrians

Damascus, SANA – Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem on Tuesday met President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer and the accompanying delegation.

Talks dealt with the standing cooperation between Syria and the ICRC and means to develop them in order to improve the humanitarian situation and meet the needs of Syrians affected by the crisis caused by the terrorist war and the sanctions imposed on Syria.

Minister al-Moallem reviewed the efforts exerted by the Syrian government and the steps taken to alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting Syrian citizens across the country.

Al-Moallem said that Syria appreciates the ICRC’s efforts in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) in humanitarian fields, affirming the government’s readiness to enhance cooperaiton with the ICRC and SARC.

For his part, Maurer thanked the Syrian government for its cooperation with the ICRC and the efforts it exerts to help the Committee deliver humanitarian aid to those who need it.

He voiced appreciation of the longstanding relationship between the Syrian government and the ICRC, pointing out to the role played by SARC in humanitarian work.

Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad also met Maurer and the delegation, discussing bilateral cooperation and means to enhance it.

Mikdad said that Syria is open to further cooperation with the ICRC in the framework of its neutral and transparent work, praising the constant development of the standing cooperation between the two sides.

In turn, Maurer said the ICRC is keen on expanding its operations and activities in Syria on all levels in cooperation with the government.
