Russian Su-25 fighter jet downed in Idleb countryside

Moscow, SANA – A Russian Su-25 fighter jet was downed in an area controlled by Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization in Idleb province, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

“On 3 February 2018, a Russian fighter jet Su-25 crashed when flying over the Idleb de-escalation zone. The pilot was able to report ejection from an area controlled by Jabhat al-Nusra militants,” the Russian defense ministry said in statement, adding that the pilot was killed while fighting against terrorists.

“According to preliminary information, the jet was brought down with a portable anti-aircraft missile system,” the Ministry said, adding that the Hmeimim-based Russian Reconciliation Center is working with Turkey to retrieve the Russian pilot’s body.

The Ministry also said that the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out concentrated strikes targeting the area from which the missile that downed the aircraft was fired in Idleb countryside, killing over 30 al-Nusra terrorists.
