Damascus, SANA – Damascus University Faculty of Architectural Engineering inaugurated a basketball court with a competition between the faculty professors and students in honor of the Faculty’s martyrs.
Minister of Higher Education Mohammed Amer al-Mardini said that this step aims at energizing students and motivating them to enjoy their hobbies in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere.
He noted that holding a basketball game at the site which has been targeted by terrorists’ mortar shells, claiming several students’ lives, conveys a message of that “the higher education system will not bow down to terrorism and that we will rebuild Syria and restore its scientific and cultural status as a beacon for the whole world.”
In turn, head of the architectural design department, Tammam Fakoush, said that such activities increase enthusiasm and interaction between students and professors and create an atmosphere of friendship which reflects positively on the students’ academic life.
Students expressed happiness and enthusiasm over this step as it enhances bonds among students and enables them to entertain themselves and continue their academic life at the same time.
The professors won the game 83-78 points amid cheers and chanting students.
On March 28, 2013, 10 students were killed and many others were injured in a terrorist attack with mortar shell on the cafeteria of Architectural Engineering Faculty in Damascus University.
